Scalp Pain

The scalp consists of the greater, lesser, and the third occipital nerve. The greater and the lesser occipital nerve comes directly off the brain to go to the scalp while the third occipital nerve comes off the spinal cord in the neck to go to the scalp. Irritation of any one of these nerves, including because of spasms of the muscles along the way, can cause a burning or “shooting” pain of the scalp. This pain can be very intrusive, affecting your daily life. Sometimes the nerves become sensitive, which can make it difficult to wear a hat or lie in bed.

Treatment

While treatment for headaches is often very complex, most interventions include medication. These interventions are based on long standing statistical data collected by studying thousands of individuals. The key to ensuring the right medication is picked (ensuring the least side effects possible for the most effect) dedicated the necessary time to trying to understand the specifics of your pain. Expect us to give you access to sources of information on these statistics and expected side effects of medications so that we may proceed in a way that you feel most comfortable.  A rare number of these syndromes could be associated with neck pain. In this case, we will focus our interventions on the neck while we attempt to control your headaches with medications
